Meet
Our 2005-2006 Scholarship Recipients
Each year FWC provides scholarships to three deserving
women. The women are selected on the basis of their
academic achievements, their determination to succeed,
often against incredible odds, and the desire to serve
society with their chosen career paths. These three
scholarships have been named for three past honorary
sponsors of FWC who have given a great deal of time and
support to our organization. We proudly present the
recipients for the year 2005-2006 and hope you will be able
to attend the November general meeting to greet them in
person.
Julene
Powell Zizza is receiving the George Harvill Award of
$3900. She is a 36 year old Special Education and
Rehabilitation Major with a grade point of 4.0. She is the
divorced mother of a 6-year- old son with special needs and
a 9-year-old daughter. She is working on a Masters Degree
and plans to graduate in Spring 2006.
Our second awardee is a 20-year-old named Karina Flores who
is receiving the Dr. Helen Schaefer Award of $3900. Her
major is Molecular and Cellular Biology and her grade point
average is 3.71. She will graduate in May 2007 and wants to
be the first person in her family to get a Doctor’s
degree.
Last, we have Deborah Alford, whom we also supported last
year. Deborah is a 52-year-old breast cancer survivor who
is studying Sociology with an emphasis on Public Health.
She has a grade point of 3.60 and has been awarded the
Phyllis Koffler Award for $3900 and plans to graduate in
May of 2006 and to help rural women make informed health
choices.
We hope that you all will support our fundraising efforts
so that we can continue to fund such worthy recipients. Our
first fundraiser of the year will be Entertainment Books.
Please purchase your books from us and encourage your
friends and relatives to do so as well. They make great
holiday gifts! The books are $35.00, the same as last year,
and if we sell a certain amount, we get two free and earn
the entire profit from the sale of those books.
Our second fundraiser will be the silent auction in
December at the Arizona Inn. Please look around and
contribute any art items or jewelry for which you no longer
have any use.
Our third fundraiser will be the raffle in the spring and
any things that we don’t use for the auction will go
towards that plus any more things like gift certificates to
restaurants and hand-made jewelry.
The Scholarship Committee wants you all to know how much we
appreciate all the support we have received from the
membership over the years and hope that it will continue.
